Whether working on a still life, a landscape,
or a portrait, my focus is always on capturing
the play of light and shadow on my subject. I
am always reluctant to lay out any very dark areas
when I begin because watercolor is such a permanent
medium, so I work in layers until I have a nice
contrast between lights and darks. For me, it
is a challenge to avoid overworking a painting.
I have to remind myself that a painting is more
effective when it leaves something to the imagination.
I am inspired by the work of my watercolor teachers,
Shannon Bickford and the late Kit Kittenger, and
am constantly striving to improve my craft by
studying the work of other contemporary watercolorists.
